The Octopus: Weird, Iconic and Perfect for Your Beach Décor

June 25th, 2014 by admin

Ever say to yourself, “Hmm, I think I’ll look for some décor featuring eight-armed cephalopod molluscs today”? Probably not, but it’s not quite as odd as it sounds. We’re talking about the octopus, of course. The octopus may be one of the ocean’s more mysterious creatures but along with the seahorse, sea turtle and dolphin, it is also one of the most popular sea life themes for beach home décor.

There are around 300 known species of octopus in the world’s oceans and they live in a variety of habitats. The range of the common octopus (Octopus vulgaris), for instance extends from southern England, through the Mediterranean, to Senegal in Africa.

There are many interesting attributes that set the octopus apart from other from other forms of sea life. For one, they have no skeleton or shell, which allows them to squeeze into tight spaces. When they eat, all use hard beaks–similar to that of a parrot–to consume a diet that usually consists of crabs, clams or shrimp. The octopus is also considered to be very intelligent, probably more so than other species of invertebrate, and some have even been known to use tools. Most can disperse clouds of ink or use camouflage to help them escape predators. Another strange fact: an octopus has three hearts. And while they may look scary, most are very shy; in fact only one small and rare species, the blue-ringed octopus of the tropical Pacific Ocean, has a bite that is toxic to humans. Save a Sea Turtle and Bring One Home in Your Décor

June 10th, 2014 by admin

We are probably all familiar with the sight of a sea turtle peacefully paddling its way through the ocean. We’ve seen them on television or at aquariums. Or maybe you’ve been fortunate enough to experience the sight of baby turtles as they make a run for the surf from their nests in the beach sand. There are seven species of sea turtles in the world and six of them are native to U.S. waters: green, hawksbill, Kemp’s ridley, leatherback, loggerhead, and olive ridley. That kind of makes it sound like turtles are thriving here, doesn’t it? Nope. Every one of those species is listed as either Endangered or Threatened. The hawksbill and the Kemp’s ridley, smallest of the species, are considered critically endangered.

The threats to turtles come from many sources. They can become caught in the nets used for fishing as well as the lines associated with traps and pots. Turtles entangled in this gear often suffer serious injuries to their flippers and can even drown. In addition, long line fishing gear can even hook turtles. Other types of commercial fishing, like the use of heavy dredges dragged along the ocean floor, can crush and entrap turtles. Read the rest of this entry »

Pirate, Skull and Crossbones Decor

January 21st, 2014 by admin

Every beach home can use a touch of pirate décor.  And let’s face it — pirates are always ‘in’.  The Skull & Crossbones is an image recognized anywhere, as firmly planted in our culture as the Red Cross or White Flag.  The legacy of pirates isn’t just limited to the coastal regions as there are a number of cities and universities, located far inland, named the Pirates.

Pirates are entrenched in our collective imaginations as these swashbuckling outlaws who defy convention, maneuvering on the outside of ‘decent’ society.  This is something that nearly all of us can relate to on some level.

North Carolina Coast Filled with Lighthouse Treasures

October 1st, 2013 by admin

Lighthouses have been a fixture along coastlines throughout the globe.  As settlers arrived in the New World and opened ports to trade with their European mother countries, lighthouses were erected up and down the Atlantic coast to safely guide these merchant ships through the often dangerous waters.  While many of these lighthouses still stand they have been obsolete for some time.  Instead of warning ships as they approached the coast they now draw tourists from inland.

What does the Anchor Symbol stand for?

September 4th, 2013 by admin

The seafaring culture has been a part of human history since the beginning.  Ancient fishing villages grew into coastal towns that became commercial havens which inevitably mixed together cultures that otherwise would never connect.  Those coastal towns evolved into huge port cities, depositing both people and goods from around the world on those shores.  A number of symbols have emerged from all that progress and history, many taking on more than one meaning over the centuries.  Symbols derived from seafaring constants such as the compass, the lighthouse, and the anchor are just a few.

Anchor Symbol Meaning

One of the first symbolic meanings behind the anchor dates back to early Christianity. In order to avoid notice from their Roman oppressors, many Christians used the rudimentary symbol to identify and communicate with one another as it bore such a close resemblance to a cross. Last weekend, we had a friend come visit from Charlotte who hadn’t been here since Spring Break in college, so naturally she wanted to visit parts of the area, with a lesser interest on guys.  So we decided to make the roughly 35 minute trek from Destin to Rosemary beach via the infamous route 30-A (which will be featured in future posts).

Though we haven’t been fortunate enough to have any encounters, it’s rumored that the unincorporated town is a favorite of Hollywood stars and starlets. As you make your way into town you will notice the clean, crisp look of a European inspired village, with awe-inspiring architecture and cobblestone streets. Small shops with living quarters above them line both sides of the main strip that runs perpendicular to 30-A.
