Amazing Ideas for Decorating a Coastal Room

July 13th, 2016 by JustinR

It’s one thing to buy a coastal home, but to design its interior with the perfect selection of décor is a project unto itself. When you’re outfitting your beach condo, bayside bungalow, or offshore cottage, follow some of these great tips for an ideal mix of subtle seashore inspiration.

Idea #1: Start with area rugs.

A waterfront room needs an initial color palette to set the design direction. Once your wall color is set, pick out a pretty coastal rug in one of your favorite nautical shades. From there, it’ll be much easier to populate the space with coordinating furniture, art, and smaller décor. Try a stunning seafoam green, or perhaps a rustic blue denim rug captures your seafaring soul. Just remember to keep things to one bold shade for a simple, sophisticated splash of color.

Idea #2: A coastal mirror makes a wonderful focal point.

Before you pick up tons of charming beach-themed trinkets or wall art, tackle your wall decoration by selecting one commanding statement piece. A majestic beach mirror made from reclaimed wood proves a show-stopping addition. Or, for a more polished look, a rectangular mirror with mother of pearl accents goes perfectly with any color scheme. Once affixed to the wall, arrange smaller pictures around your reflective beauty. For symmetry, a pair of matching framed art prints will unify the coastal theme. You can also try some other unique decorative pieces, such as this 3D sailboat wall sculpture, for an unexpected nod to the sea.

Idea #3: Don’t forget a maritime-inspired wall clock.

Days at the shore—especially during summer—can be long, lazy, and totally luxurious. But it’s easy to lose track of time. That’s why smart sailors always kept a trusted time-keeping piece close by. A porthole wall clock not only performs its practical job, but it also serves as a stunning piece of maritime wall art.

Idea #4: Keep furniture simple and understated.

Decorating a shore home is all about the small details. So, when it comes to your major purchases, such as a sofa, chair, or table, it’s best to stay with a traditional look. For instance, a brown leather storage ottoman is handsomely rugged, universal, and highly durable for years of dependable use.

Idea #5: While natural light abounds, you still need additional lighting.

Keep the space properly lit during the late evening and into night with some thoughtfully selected nautical table lamps. A crisp white lamp with coral base matches any design motif, while a wicker base table lamp adds rustic charm in any home. Placed on an end table or on a hallway hutch, family and guests’ paths will stay well lit. Meanwhile, your carefully crafted coastal room will illuminate in its gorgeous splendor.
